History
History
Veitscher Magnesitwerke AG (VMAG) – now RHI Magnesita, built a magnesium oxide production unit in its plant at Breitenau, Austria, in 1971. During the 1980s the MgO-unit was modified for the utilization of the raw material serpentine and extensive R&D work was carried out on the development of high-quality magnesium hydroxides for fire retardant and fine chemical applications.
At the end of 1988, VMAG signed a cooperation agreement with Martinswerk GmbH, the world’s leading supplier of aluminum hydroxide-based flame retardants. This led to the foundation of MAGNIFIN Magnesiaprodukte GmbH & Co KG as 50/50 JV between VMAG and Martinswerk GmbH in 1990. The company commissioned its new magnesium hydroxide plant in September 1991 and has since then successfully expanded production capacity. The current manufacturing program features magnesium hydroxide, magnesium oxide, sodium silicate and silica with a variety of specifications for customers throughout the world.
J.M. Huber Corporation originally acquired a 50% ownership interest in MAGNIFIN as part of the purchase of the Martinswerk operation from Albemarle in 2016. The acquisition of the remaining 50% share of RHI Magnesita in the 50/50 joint venture was completed effective December 2021 and MAGNIFIN Magnesiaprodukte GmbH & Co KG is now part of the Huber Advanced Materials strategic business unit.
